Testing, testing...

Hello! Welcome! We created a blog as a way to stay in touch with family and friends during our 2013 Appalachian Trail thru-hike.

We are planning to head to Michigan from Washington in late June. After spending a little bit of time with Ethan's family, his parents will lug us over to Maine where we will start the trail at Baxter Peak! We are starting the trail Southbound - SOBO - since we are starting so late in the season. Typically, hikers will start in March or April from Georgia, at Springer Mountain, and head Northbound - NOBO.

At this point, we've got just about all our gear and are itchin' to start! We registered at REI for our wedding and got almost everything we need for backpacking.

We will be using this book as our trail guide. It's got distances along the entire trail, as well as information on towns, such as shower stops (yes!), hostels, grocery stores, etc. along the trail.
Originally, we had planned to buy all of our food in advance and have it packed and shipped to post offices along the way... But then we realized that it would be more of a hassle than worth it... Imagine getting into a town with a post office on a Saturday and having to wait until Monday to get your food.

Here are some photos of us taken last October, in Olympic National Park. This was our first backpacking trip together, three weeks after we got married.

Although we are still two months from starting the trail, we will post occasionally until then and hope to post frequently on the trail when we come into towns with wi-fi. We'd love your comments!
